Ministry of Housing, Transport and Environment

The Ministry of Housing, Transport and Environment (MHTE) was formed on 11th November 2008, with the merger of four former Ministries; namely the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Ministry of Environment, Energy and Water, Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation. Thus the majority of the infrastructure developments within the country is being facilitated through this Ministry. MHTE has the overall mandate for the facilitation of the development and delivery of sustainable solutions for housing, infrastructure, transport, environment, climate change, energy and water and sewerage.

The housing and urban development sector has two main overall responsibilities. These include to overseeing and regulating the physical development of the country and to facilitate the development and delivery of sustainable solutions for affordable housing through development projects.

Further the MHTE is also mandated to oversee and regulate the social infrastructures for the country as well as, for the creation and development of the necessary regulatory framework for the construction industry.

MHTE is responsible for ensuring that the overall developments in the country are targeted towards achieving sustainability and environment conservation.
